A Fairy Tale Hike at Donnabeth Lippman Park in Windham

On a hectic weekend with little time to spare, we still managed to sneak out for a few hours to get in a quick hike. Hike may be overstating the exertion needed for the terrain on this particular trail. It was really more of a beautiful walk but, given our time constraints, was the perfect destination for this particular Saturday outing.

We had driven by the entrance to the park many times. It is marked by a large, rectangular granite sign etched in black lettering, announcing the entrance to the Donnabeth Lippman Park. But, this was our first time turning down to discover what was at the other end. Given how busy things were this particular weekend, we had not done any research ahead of time so had no expectations on what the trails would be like. Serendipity and Strawberries lead us to a stop at the Kettle Cove Creamery & Cafe

I’m a planner. Rarely do I venture out without a plan in mind. I know that limits me and that I might miss moments of serendipity, but I’ve learned that I function better that way. Even so, there are those rare occasions when I wing it. It’s a big deal when I do.

So, on an excursion to go strawberry picking at Maxwell’s Farm in Cape Elizabeth, my youngest daughter and I decided we’d grab lunch on the way. I didn’t google restaurants in the area. I didn’t check out yelp reviews. I didn’t even have a place in mind based on a past experience, other than a vague sense that I’d passed some cute little spots when traveling in this vicinity in the past. We were going to let the day unfold on it’s own. Continue reading

Dinner on the Waterfront at Boone’s Fish House & Oyster Room in Portland, Maine

We ventured into Portland on a recent Friday night, and after stopping at Maps for a happy hour drink, strolled over to the waterfront and into Boone’s Fish House & Oyster Room. One of my absolute favorite things to do on a warm summer evening is to eat outside while enjoying ocean views. Fortunately, there are an abundance of choices available to me in Maine.

When I saw a Groupon posted for Boone’s Fish House & Oyster Room, I knew it was the perfect excuse to head back to this charm filled waterfront restaurant. But, as it can be quite pricey I was happy to have the discount in hand.

We hadn’t made any reservations, but it was one of those relaxed occasions where we were enjoying a leisurely evening and not watching the clock, so we were fine grabbing a drink at the bar while waiting for our table to be ready. It is amazing how much slower time moves when you are unscheduled. It’s wonderful. Continue reading

Spring Festival at Wolfe’s Neck Farm

What’s a fun thing to do on a lovely spring day? Head to Wolfe’s Neck Farm in Freeport. Their annual spring festival was scheduled for early June, and we decided to take a ride up and check out the festivities.

The description of the farm from their brochure reads,

“Wolfe’s Neck Farm is a nonprofit educational farm dedicated to promoting sustainable agriculture, farm-based learning, and outdoor recreation while preserving 626 acres of open space and historic buildings.”

I was familiar with the farm but had actually never visited so I was looking forward to the road trip. As we got closer to the farm, we were greeted by stunning ocean views. There is a campground at Wolfe’s Neck Farm, Recompence Shore Campground, which is along the oceanfront and looks like an amazing place to stay. I might have to add that to my to-do list. Although I gave away my tent, after storing it unopened in my basement for ten years, there are a few cabins available to rent at the campground. Continue reading

Getting a Haircut at the Blind Pig Barber Company in Portland Maine

My husband is utilitarian when it comes to getting his haircut. He’s had the same hairstyle since we met and goes faithfully to super cuts every two months for a trim. When I spotted a Groupon for a more upscale men’s barber shop in Portland, the Blind Pig Barber Company, I thought it might be a fun change of pace for him to try something new.

Being a good sport, he let me tag along so that I could take pictures and blog about the experience. We headed over on a Friday afternoon around 5:00 pm. My husband made a reservation, but we probably could have done a walk in appointment at that time as it was not too crowded. If you’re heading that way, I’d still opt for the reservation. You can even make one online. Always better to be prepared, and it was picking up a bit as we left. Continue reading
