Spending the Morning Strawberry Picking at Maxwell’s Farm in Cape Elizabeth

One of the many joys of summer is that it is berry filled. The end of June is the kick-off to strawberry season here in Maine. There is nothing better than enjoying them freshly picked, but you have to be quick. At only 3 to 4 weeks long, the strawberry season is short, like most things in Maine.

The strawberry season generally runs from the end of June to the end of July. This year was a bit of a late start because of our cool spring but they’re ripening now and I’m looking forward to a visit to the farm soon.

Last year on July 4th weekend, my youngest daughter and I ventured out to Maxwell’s Farm in Cape Elizabeth and picked a heaping flat of strawberries. Fresh strawberries are amazing, but you need to enjoy them as soon as possible after picking. The shelf life is short-lived which is generally not a problem at my house because they are devoured rapidly especially around the Fourth when we usually have a full house. Continue reading

Friday Favorites | Five craft beer activities to do in Maine this weekend.

My husband and I have been working our way through the Maine Beer Trail as part of my bucket list adventures for 2017. There are a lot of local craft breweries and the number continues to expand. It will probably take us longer than one year to get all the stamps on our beer trail map and that’s okay. The adventure is in working our way through the stops and getting to explore more of Maine.

For this week’s Friday Favorites, here are five craft beer activities happening in Maine this weekend. Continue reading

Pepperell Mills Tour

A tour through Maine’s textile history at the Pepperell Mills in Biddeford.

My happy childhood unfolded in Saco. My parents grew up in Biddeford so we still had close ties to that area too.  Most people from the two neighboring towns tend to have connections in both places. While there is a rivalry, it is more of the sibling variety and the two towns remain entwined in many ways including a shared history with the now empty textile mills that line the Saco River.

The Biddeford Mills Museum offers seasonal tours of the Pepperell Mill complete with colorful stories that take you back in time to glimpse the past. The first room on the tour was a light filled expanse now empty other than a few random items discarded off to the side. It was hard to image the room as it must have been when oil lamps provided light and looms lined every bit of the open floor space leaving little area to maneuver. Continue reading

Five things I learned at the JoJo Concert at Port City Music Hall

My first concert was Shaun Cassidy. I remember little of the concert today but I still have some pictures. This was no easy feat for a show held decades before cell phones. I wish I could take credit for this work of photo artistry but it was actually my friend Ann who took them. She had the better seats. I’d still be bitter except she did share her pictures with me. She’s a good friend. Continue reading

Friday Favorites | Five free things to do this weekend in the Portland area.

Even though it was a short week with the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, it doesn’t make this weekend’s arrival any less sweet. While I am a planner and often have my weekends scheduled out well ahead of time, sometimes it’s fun to just be spontaneous.

For the kickoff of my Friday Favorites series, I’ve listed five free activities happening in and around the Portland area this weekend. Continue reading
