Ten things I learned on my first trip to the Common Ground Country Fair in Unity Maine.

Normally, I am an exceptionally prepared person but when I decided to head up to Unity for the last day of the Common Ground Country Fair I jumped into the car on a whim and with no supplies. We had just celebrated the first day of fall but the temperatures were rebelling and heading up towards the 90s. A few basics like sunscreen and water would have been helpful, but fortunately it didn’t ruin my first experience at the Common Ground Country Fair.

The Common Ground Country Fair is a sponsored by the Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association (MOFGA) and celebrates organic agriculture and rural life. This scouting trip gave me a basic overview of the event and will help me be better prepared next time I head back for hopefully a longer visit. Continue reading

A Visit to Urban Farm Fermentory for Kombucha and a Tasting Flight.

This past winter we spent a quiet Thursday afternoon enjoying the tasting room at Urban Farm Fermentory. While you can find selections from Urban Farm Fermentory throughout bars and restaurants in the Portland area, I had never tried  kombucha or any of their other offerings.

The tasting room at Urban Farm Fermentory is spacious and inviting. One of the benefits of going early on a weekday afternoon meant it was also uncrowded. Even though the place was mostly empty when we arrived, with plenty of open tables, we opted to sit up at the bar which has a creative, fun vibe. Continue reading

Hiking Maine | Amazing Ocean Views at East Point Sanctuary Trail in Biddeford Pool

It’s nice to reach the summit after an especially challenging hike. There is a sense of accomplishment. But, it can also be fun to stumble upon something spectacular without having to work too hard. The trail at East Point Sanctuary in Biddeford Pool is the later. It’s a casual stroll with stunning ocean views at every turn.

The simple metal gate at the trail entrance is not  a good preview of what lies beyond. The trail is far more beautiful than the gate implies. We even walked by the gate on our initial attempt to find the trail head. Continue reading

Hiking Maine | Great Salt Bay Preserve Heritage Trail in Newcastle

With summer winding down, we were looking to take advantage of some of the last of the warm weather so we headed up the coast for a hike on the Great Salt Bay Preserve Heritage Trail in Newcastle. It was an interesting hike with varied trails and some fun vistas.

Key Points

Vistas. While the initial path was on the edge of the marsh and marked by planks to keep you above any mud and water, the trail quickly turned into a more wooded area without direct views of the bay. Fortunately, there were plenty of side trails leading to viewing areas throughout the hike. These side paths bring you to the water’s edge and open up views from all angles. Some of the vistas included Grandfather Point, Picnic Point, and Lookout Point. Continue reading
