Portland Breakwater Lighthouse is more commonly known as Bug Light due to its diminutive size. Plus, bug light just sounds so much cooler. It is also the place to go if you want to fly a kite as the wind is wicked by the water. I’ve blogged about it before in my post Kite Festival at Bug Light Park, South Portland.
I also returned to the park again when trying to launch a homemade Castiel kite during our Gishwhes Scavenger Hunt this past August. You probably need to be a fan of the TV show Supernatural to understand that previous sentence. Sadly, it’s not even my first reference to Supernatural during this blogging challenge. I’m a bit obsessed. But, you don’t need to be a fan of the show to get the gist.
Bug Light Park is the best place to go fly a kite.
When stopping by in the winter to photograph the lighthouse, the wind was even more intense. Snow never stays long so close to the ocean but I love that someone put so much energy into building a gigantic, although somewhat primitive, snowman before the snow melted away. While he had faded a bit, the snowman still had a strong presence as he kept watch over the harbor next to Bug Light.
Lighthouses are always fun to visit, but they take on a lonelier, more isolated feel during the winter months.

Why have I never thought of flying a kite here? This is a brilliant idea! My father in law is into fancy kites, but we mostly just use them at Popham.

Popham is a great kite flying spot too. The kite festival at Bug Light Park is worth checking out. It’s a lot of fun.

I thought you wrote “Bud Light” instead of “Bug Light” at first. I was very confused as to why a small lighthouse would have a nickname related to beer.

Maybe there is a bottle shaped lighthouse somewhere with the nickname of Bud Light. That would be fun.

The coasts around the British Isles have a fine selection of lighthouses, sadly most are no longer in use and many have fallen into disrepair.

Sad to see them in disrepair. Maine has a lot of lighthouses and we’re sometimes called The Lighthouse State although I recently learned that Michigan has more lighthouses than we do so maybe that should be their nickname.

I do like visiting lighthouses and flying kites! I’m not a very good kite flyer though. I have had some notorious kite crashes.

I love lighthouses and although we don’t get snow in Brisbane, Australia, last year they made some snow and I took my grandson. We had great fun building a snowman. Have a great weekend. x

Lighthouses are my favourite things in the whole world! I’d like to live in one . . .
And I can only imagine how hard it was for Snowman’s creator to scrape together enough snow for their creation. Masterful!

Lighthouses have a romantic quality. There are so many interesting ones too. I love the little compact size of “bug light”.

That is a VERY cute lighthouse and a very un-cute snowman. Kind of a nice contrast – and love the blue of the sky and water.

Bug Light Park has such beautiful views. I too loved the contrast of this simple big snowman with the cute little lighthouse in the background.

Wollongong, my hometown. has two lighthouses. The Breakwater lighthouse was restored in 2002 and is lit for special occasions. The Flagstaff Hill lighthouse is still operating. Wollongong is the only point on the Eastern Coast of Australia which has two lighthouses.

That is so wonderful that they restored the Breakwater Lighthouse. I hate to see them fall into disrepair. Lighthouses are so iconic.

I do love lighthouses, although we don’t have many to visit here in Kansas 🙂 Someday I hope to drive up and down the East Coast and make frequent stops to photograph the wide assortment of lighthouses.
