We hike a lot and, as I blogged about earlier in the challenge, coastal hikes are my favorite. But, depending on the trail, they can also be challenging and restrictive if you have mobility issues. If you’re looking for a place to go for beautiful ocean views, without putting on your hiking shoes, then Marginal Way in Ogunquit is you’re place.
Ogunquit literally means “Beautiful Place by The Sea” in the language of the Algonquin Indians. It’s truth in advertising at it’s best.
Marginal Way is an easy walk along a paved trail that runs parallel to the shoreline. There are a few inclines, but nothing overly strenuous. It allows you to get up close to the rocky shore without actually scrambling on the rocks. There are a few access points from the trail leading down to the water if you are a little more adventurous.
It’s definitely a great place for a stroll. Even in the winter, it won’t be deserted. We visited in February and there were plenty of other people on the trail as well as walking the beach or surfing in the water. It’s a popular, super busy spot and top tourist destination.
I haven’t visited in the summer in many years because it can be a little overwhelming although my bucket list for this year, which I blogged about in my post 10 Maine Adventures on My Bucket List for 2018, includes a trip to the Ogunquit Playhouse this summer so I may be braving the crowds soon.

Nothing as nice as this bit of coast, but I do like to get out of the city, and fortunately there are some lovely lochs (lakes) not far from where I stay – looking forward to visiting them again this summer.

Yes, getting out of the city can be wonderful. We have a some more remote locations here too. I would love to get to Scotland someday and visit the lochs.

Lots of places to stroll near us but nothing as beautiful as yours. Perhaps later in the year we will be abe to match such scenes in Cornwall.

I love the rail trails that are still being build up my direction. I’ve heard of Marginal Way but I don’t think I’ve ever made it there…I would like to. Melanie’s Stories

September is a beautiful month to walk Marginal Way. Ogunquit can be a little too busy in the summer months.

I love being by the ocean at the shore but would not ever go on a transatlantic cruise. Being in the middle of the ocean scares me.

The images are breathtakingly beautiful, even if it looks cold. I’ve never been in Maine, but I hear it’s prettier than any postcard. Having grown up with harsh winters, that part I do remember well. 🙂 Wonderful post and love reading about your hiking-by-the coastline experience.

Confirm that it is both gorgeous and accessible. Gorgeous is never an issue in Maine, but easy access can be more challenging as the coast is rocky.

THats a wonderful place for a stroll. I live in a city and it’s not easy to have access to such quaint places but I fondly remember my trip to HK where I hiked quite a lot and loved being close to nature

Yes. It’s extremely crowded in the summer. It’s one of our most popular tourist spots. Even in the winter I was amazed by how many people were there.

I visited Ogunquit once in the mid-80s. It was our first getaway after our first baby was born. It holds special memories for sure (mostly … sleeping through the night) 🙂

We’ve had a few getaways to Ogunquit, though not for a while. I love the Marginal Way! There was a restaurant called Hurricane in Perkins Cove – do you know if it’s still there?
