Winter mist is probably my favorite winter scene. It arrives unexpectedly and makes everything it touches eerie and surreal.
“Mist is tiny droplets of water hanging in the air. These droplets form when warmer water in the air is rapidly cooled, causing it to change from invisible gas to tiny visible water droplets.”1
When the conditions are right, it creates a magical landscape. It also has this amazing way of draining color from the scene. All my photos in this post are color but the mist seems to wash most of the color away leaving behind unsaturated wondrous images.
Fog is denser and more all encompassing. You can’t see far in fog making it feel more ominous which Stephen King used to his advantage. But, mist? Mist is less dense and more ethereal. You can see distances through the mist but it’s distorted and more like viewing a painting than looking into nature.
It doesn’t happen frequently, but a few times each winter we get some amazing mist covering the lake.

The mist is so magical and mysterious. I wouldn’t be surprised if a mermaid poked her head up.

I love mist although we don’t get it very often where I live. I have a view of the CBD and sometimes the taller buildings are shrouded in mist. I also have a view of the park across the street and I love the misty mornings during winter. Gorgeous photos! Have a great weekend.

That mist is beautiful – so evokative of mystery and always reminds me of Arthurian type tales where knights emerge from the mist. Very rare to see mist where we are in Australia (we’re on the other coast to Sue – but still too warm most of the year to get it).

These photos are awesome! It’s like living in Washington State, as I do…you have to embrace all the weather patterns and enjoy each day…waiting for a sunny day here to do anything could take awhile…

A shroud is always so evocative! Anything can be hiding in its folds. Mist is the world’s shroud. Doesn’t it just make your imagination soar?!
