#AtoZChallenge | F is for Four Winter Hikes and Extra Points in Scattegories

One of my favorite cold weather activities is hiking. Fortunately, we have an abundance of trails in Maine but I don’t always blog about every hike that we take. So, for today’s challenge post, I’m sharing pictures from four different hikes we took this past winter.

Have you ever played Scattegories? It’s one of my favorite games. The basic premise is that you roll a letter dice, and then you have to think of words that begin with that letter for various categories . If you come up with multiple words that start with that letter for a category, you get extra points. This post gets extra points since the name of three of the four trails that we hiked also begin with the letter F.

#AtoZChallenge | C is for a Coastal Hike at Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park

Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park is a gorgeous coastal hike. It’s my favorite type of trail. After hiking through the forest, you take a short passage down to the ocean’s edge and emerge onto stunning coastal views.

We did this hike as winter was winding down last year, so the snow was manageable as we hiked through the forest, although we did still need our crampons. When the weather starts warming up,  you need to be extra cautious about ice. Since there is a lot of melting and refreezing happening at this time of year, there can be some hidden slick spots.

#AtoZChallenge | B is for Bradbury Mountain State Park and Snowshoeing Adventures

I love a bargain. Sale is probably my favorite four letter word. So when we bought our first Maine state park pass, I was excited to learn that if you buy it after August 15th it is actually good through the end of the following year which meant we could go on even more hiking adventures.

When the credit card sized blue pass arrived in the mail, we started researching state parks and making plans. While we had already hiked many trails throughout the state, we hadn’t yet gone to many of the state parks so this was our opportunity to try some new destinations.

Our first winter hike while using our park pass was to Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal. Fate was kind to us and it was the perfect day to visit.

Hiking Maine | An amazing winter hike on the Cathance River Trail in Topsham.

Winter hikes are my favorite. Each season certainly has its charms, but I’ll take winter hiking any time. There are no bugs and the landscape is magical when coated in white.

We headed to the Cathance River Trail in Topsham this past Saturday. After arriving at the trail, we sat at a bench near the entrance to put on our Stabilicers in anticipation of icy trails. As I was adjusting my crampon straps, a father walked out of the trail entrance carrying his young son who had taken a minor sledding spill on the slick trails. The boy’s nose was bleeding, but he had a big smile.  After glancing at us, the father commented “You came prepared.” It was going to be an icy one.

Looking back on 2017, my second year of blogging, I continue to be excited with the direction of my blog, and motivated to expand and grow my content. There is a never-ending selection of adventures available in Maine. But, before I jump into 2018, here are ten of my favorite activities from this past year, and links to the blog posts I wrote about them.

(1) Getting to Know Me | 30 Odd Questions #Blogfest . I was a blog hop newbie, but this year I participated in one hosted by Emily’s World and The Doglady’s Den. I met Debbie from The Doglady’s Den during the annual A to Z Challenge. I enjoyed learning more about other bloggers during this blog hop as well as sharing a little bit  about myself too.
