N is for Northwoods Gourmet Girl | The special joy of a Blueberry Dessert Sauce.

I’m sure it’s no surprise that blueberries would come up in my A to Z posts. As my previous blog post shared, Maine is the largest producer of wild blueberries in the world. And, there are some great local business incorporating blueberries into their product lines.

I stumbled upon Northwoods Gourmet Girl Blueberry & Green Tea Dessert Sauce randomly while shopping at Bow Street Market in Freeport. I was intrigued as even though I’ve eating blueberries all my life, I’d never had them in a dessert sauce.

I’m sure this will date me, but I pulled out my “Cooking with Friends” (as in the TV show) cookbook. When my husband and I bought our first house, we hosted a housewarming party and asked guests to bring either a bottle of wine or a cookbook. I know it’s a little greedy to ask guests to bring something so specific, but we do have an amazing collection of cookbooks now. The wine however is long gone.

In fairness, I did have to dust off the cookbook but I knew it had a delicious blueberry muffin recipe. The recipe uses two sticks of butter and a cup of sour cream so I’m pretty sure no one from the cast of Friends actually ever ate these muffins, but it’s believable that they would have been served at Central Perk.

While it’s a great recipe on its own, I jazzed it up a bit by adding some of Northwoods Gourmet Girl’s Blueberry & Green Tea sauce to the recipe. After filling the muffin tins half full, I added a dollop of sauce before topping it off with more batter and then baked as per the recipe.

Once they were out of the oven and slightly cooled, I enjoyed two muffins filled with blueberry deliciousness for lunch. Don’t judge me, it was a Saturday and I was hungry. I really liked this use of the dessert sauce. While the sauce did not stay liquid once baked, It added a nice punch of concentrated blueberry flavor to center of the muffins.

And, I’m going to hang on to my cookbook. It’s going to be a collector’s item someday, although you can currently pick it up from third-party sellers on Amazon for $.49 so it might take a while.

We used the Blueberry & Green Tea Dessert Sauce in a few other ways too. We tried it over vanilla cake with Maine made Gifford’s old-fashioned vanilla ice cream. Adding the sauce added a nice touch of flavor to the dessert.

We also tried it over pancakes at breakfast although my husband did point out the irony in the fact that I don’t eat blueberry pancakes but I was happy to smother my plain pancakes in the blueberry dessert sauce. What can I say? I’m complicated.

These are just a few foods I tried with my delicious Northwoods Gourmet Girl’s Blueberry & Green Tea Dessert Sauce, but I’m sure there’s a whole bunch of pairings that would be just perfect. Here’s my list of things I think would be even yummier topped with the dessert sauce:

Cheesecake
Blondies
Yogurt
Pie
Waffles
Crepes
Oatmeal
Blueberry Bread

Although I really enjoyed my muffins, so adding it to your baked goods is a tasty option too. Or, maybe I’ll go savory which will bring up another list of options.

It was a fun sauce and makes me want to try some of Northwoods Gourmet Girl’s other items. I think I could even outfit my next summer picnic with their condiment line which includes a relish, mustard and three different ketchups.  Or, maybe I’ll try one of their caramel sauces on my next ice cream treat.

Their products are free of preservatives and artificial ingredients, which gives me even more incentive to add a few more Northwoods Gourmet Girl products to my cupboard shelves.

What would you use a blueberry dessert sauce for?

I am so thoroughly jealous of your wild blueberries. We have to head north from here to get them, but they are so good I am willing to fight off the bears for them (and by fight, I mean risk seeing one, because I’m not going to get in an actual fight with one. Choppy, on the other hand, is not a bear fan and would happily test her strength against one).

Choppy halfheartedly chases the deer around here, but she really, truly hates bears. Every time we have seen one (all from inside the car), she goes absolutely ballistic. She probably has some old, bear-fighting dog blood in her. Either that, or she’s related to Charley, John Steinbeck’s poodle, who was placid in all situations except for the appearance of bears (if one can believe what you read in “Travels with Charley”).

Does Maine do blueberry wine too? I spent a summer in university in the Saguenay region of Quebec – which is also known for blueberries and they did wine. It was not something I loved, but I never forgot blueberry wine. As for sauce – that sounds awesome. I’d put it on ice cream.

Oh – and I had a good giggle about no Friends cast member EVER eating those muffins.
