Serendipity and Strawberries lead us to a stop at the Kettle Cove Creamery & Cafe

I’m a planner. Rarely do I venture out without a plan in mind. I know that limits me and that I might miss moments of serendipity, but I’ve learned that I function better that way. Even so, there are those rare occasions when I wing it. It’s a big deal when I do.

So, on an excursion to go strawberry picking at Maxwell’s Farm in Cape Elizabeth, my youngest daughter and I decided we’d grab lunch on the way. I didn’t google restaurants in the area. I didn’t check out yelp reviews. I didn’t even have a place in mind based on a past experience, other than a vague sense that I’d passed some cute little spots when traveling in this vicinity in the past. We were going to let the day unfold on it’s own.

Dinner on the Waterfront at Boone’s Fish House & Oyster Room in Portland, Maine

We ventured into Portland on a recent Friday night, and after stopping at Maps for a happy hour drink, strolled over to the waterfront and into Boone’s Fish House & Oyster Room. One of my absolute favorite things to do on a warm summer evening is to eat outside while enjoying ocean views. Fortunately, there are an abundance of choices available to me in Maine.

When I saw a Groupon posted for Boone’s Fish House & Oyster Room, I knew it was the perfect excuse to head back to this charm filled waterfront restaurant. But, as it can be quite pricey I was happy to have the discount in hand.

We hadn’t made any reservations, but it was one of those relaxed occasions where we were enjoying a leisurely evening and not watching the clock, so we were fine grabbing a drink at the bar while waiting for our table to be ready. It is amazing how much slower time moves when you are unscheduled. It’s wonderful.

Dinner & Drinks at LFK in Portland, Maine

I love a good deal and having scored a Localvore discount for LFK in Portland, we headed over on a recent Friday night for an early dinner.  We’d stopped in before during one of our Portland Beer Week Scavenger Hunts, but we’d never been there for food.

LFK is located on State Street by Longfellow Square. The restaurant is nice and bright with an eclectic style showcasing its literary theme. When we first arrived, we grabbed a small table by the side entrance, but after ordering some drinks we noticed that a few seats had opened up at the bar, so we migrated that way before ordering our meal. There’s just something more festive about sitting at the bar.

Lobster Rolls from Bite into Maine Food Truck

Food Trucks have been on the rise in recent years and that’s a great thing for food lovers. There are so many creative, unique ones in the greater Portland area and we’re looking forward checking some of them out this summer. With that goal in mind, we headed out to Bite Into Maine this past Saturday. I had been hearing a lot about this food truck in recent months and was craving a lobster roll. Not really surprising. I’m always  craving a lobster roll.

Food trucks come in a lot of varieties. They can be truly mobile and head to different locations from day-to-day adding a sense of adventure to getting your meal. Other food trucks might specialize in attending festivals, or other gatherings, and be more of an event type truck. Still others are located in the same place and, while technically mobile, can always be found in one spot.

Friday Night Happy Hour Stops at Crooners & Cocktails and Sonny’s

This past Friday was a bit of a ping-pong day for us with some bouncing back and forth to and from Portland. We took advantage of the situation and on our last trip into the city decided to grab a lite bite at one of the many happy hour destinations.

Happy Hour is like hitting the early bird special but getting to enjoy a beer with your meal. How awesome is that? And, all at a nice little discount.

Our first stop was Crooners & Cocktails. This is a beautifully executed theme restaurant with a throw back feel to the days of Frank Sinatra and The Rat Pack. The black and white decor lends a cocktail party flair to the atmosphere. I think I would have been comfortable in that era. I have spent many weekends watching movies set during the time period so, naturally, I enjoy the look and feel of this destination.
