Hiking Maine | Amazing Ocean Views at East Point Sanctuary Trail in Biddeford Pool

It’s nice to reach the summit after an especially challenging hike. There is a sense of accomplishment. But, it can also be fun to stumble upon something spectacular without having to work too hard. The trail at East Point Sanctuary in Biddeford Pool is the later. It’s a casual stroll with stunning ocean views at every turn.

The simple metal gate at the trail entrance is not  a good preview of what lies beyond. The trail is far more beautiful than the gate implies. We even walked by the gate on our initial attempt to find the trail head.

Cabbage Island Clambakes | A True Maine Experience

From the time we stepped onto the Bennie Alice for our boat ride to Cabbage Island until returning to Boothbay Harbor later that evening, everyone associated with Cabbage Island Clambakes was incredibly friendly and attentive. It’s impressive when the service stands out as much as the lobster at a clambake although the lobster was amazing too.

Our evening tour departed from Pier 6 in Boothbay Harbor at 5:00 pm but the line to board was already winding around the corner and deep when we arrived a little before 4:30 pm. No one seemed concerned with the wait, as pockets of people chatting casually with one another. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the beautiful summer night.

Hiking Maine | Amazing Ocean Views at Reid State Park in Georgetown

Arriving at a new hiking destination for the first time is always a bit confusing. So when we stopped at the admission booth at Reid State Park to show them our park pass, we asked for a map and she handed us a photocopied, one page simply drawn diagram. It was a nice, high level overview but didn’t help us figure out where we actually wanted to go. After passing through the entrance, we encountered a fork in the road, and went left.

We quickly came upon a decent size parking area also on our left. I caught brief views of the ocean horizon through openings in the trees so it seemed like a good place to start. We pulled into the lot, and my husband opted to hang in the car so he could cajole his cell phone into bringing up more helpful hiking maps for the area. It’s always a challenge on our hikes to make technology work for us. I’m fine without it, but my husband likes to have a plan mapped out. So, while he worked on pulling the route together, I made a beeline for the beach.

Spring teaser at Popham Beach State Park and a visit to the Fort.

There are always those random days in the heart of winter that tease us with warmer temperatures and remind us that spring is not as far away as it sometimes seems after three consecutive snow storms. They’re always a special, happy occasion. When the temperatures jumped up to 55 degrees on a recent Sunday, we headed to Popham Beach State Park. For Maine in February, this was practically sunbathing weather.

We were struggling to find trails in the area that would be appropriate for winter hiking, so in the end decided to head to the beach and walk along the water which turned out to be the perfect decision. We arrived just after low tide which was ideal for exploring this popular destination. While there is a beautiful, sandy beach area there is also the rocky and interesting Fox Island just off the shore which can be accessed by foot only during low tide.
