T is for Tree + Vine | Costumes that match a child’s imagination.

I have owned a sewing machine since I was thirteen. My Mom handed her’s down to me in almost new condition. It was a Singer and came with a cabinet so you could put it away when not in use. It was a workhorse that stayed with me through multiple apartments and homes. It finally died but it was a slow death. My grandmother, who was an amazing seamstress and quilted right up until her death at 93, knew a repair guy who could fix my sewing machine. He did. He fixed it many times. But, he was also in his nineties and eventually passed away. I could never find anyone else able to repair it.

Eventually, someone bought it at one of our yard sales. I hope they know someone with that special touch who might be able to breathe life into it again. I miss that sewing machine. It was the one I learned to sew on. My other grandmother taught me. We made a Gunny Sack dress that I adored and wore for years. We also made pink satin shorts and a matching jacket because I was in love with Shaun Cassidy of Hardy Boys fame and he wore a satin jacket. The shorts were a bonus.

Dinner & Drinks at LFK in Portland, Maine

I love a good deal and having scored a Localvore discount for LFK in Portland, we headed over on a recent Friday night for an early dinner.  We’d stopped in before during one of our Portland Beer Week Scavenger Hunts, but we’d never been there for food.

LFK is located on State Street by Longfellow Square. The restaurant is nice and bright with an eclectic style showcasing its literary theme. When we first arrived, we grabbed a small table by the side entrance, but after ordering some drinks we noticed that a few seats had opened up at the bar, so we migrated that way before ordering our meal. There’s just something more festive about sitting at the bar.

Laughter with Jerry Seinfeld at the Merrill Auditorium

With anytime, anywhere access to entertainment through our mobile devices, the days of must see TV are long gone but they’ll always be tied in my memory with Thursday nights and Seinfeld. So the opportunity to catch his stand up show at the Merrill Auditorium this past weekend was too good to pass up even if the tickets were a little pricey. Some things are worth the splurge.

Portland was energized on Friday. After quite a few dreary, cooler days, it was finally warm and even a little bit sunny. People were excited to be out and about for the evening. Your couldn’t help but enjoy yourself with the knowledge that we’re finally closing in on summer.

Saturday Night Enjoying Pizza at the Portland Pie Co.

Pizza is one of those go to foods that often gets a bad rap or is dismissed as fast food. Probably because there are a lot of not so great pizza options out there. Fortunately, there are a lot of delicious, more creative choices available too. When some friends came up this past weekend, we decided to go to the Portland Pie Co.

While the Portland Pie Co. originated in Portland, they have expanded to seven restaurants throughout Maine and New Hampshire according to the location finder on their website. I counted up the pizza flags on the map which was more challenging than it sounds. For our Saturday night excursion, we headed to their Portland location on York Street.

Wings Closeup

#atozchallenge | W is for Wings Made with Deer Camp Black Bear Chipotle BBQ Sauce

Finding ourselves in Portland one late afternoon with a few hours to spare, my daughter and I decided to pick up a few groceries at Trader Joe’s. Since the trip was unplanned, we didn’t have a shopping list so instead spent time wandering the aisles. Shopping without a list can be a dangerous activity. You never know what you’ll bring home. On a whim, I grabbed a two-pound bag of frozen organic chicken wings. I love wings, but surprisingly have never actually made them at home. This seemed like a reasonable splurge.

During checkout, the cashier commented that he’d heard great things about the wings saying “You wouldn’t think wings would be anything special, but they’re supposed to be delicious”. Interesting observation. I was feeling pretty pleased with my purchase.
