Tasting our way through the Fork Food Lab grand opening.

Hanging out at the Fork Food Lab grand opening was a festive experience. We were not alone in our excitement at checking out this new shared kitchen space. We arrived a little after six pm and the party was in full swing, along with a decent size line waiting to enter but fortunately things were moving quickly.

The perimeter of the parking area in front of Fork Food Labs was lined with tables where Fork Food Lab members were passing out samples of their tasty food creations. There were pockets of people huddled around the tables waiting for their turn to try the samples, as well as other sporadic lines. It was a little hard to know exactly where to go at times but it all worked out.

Spring Festival at Wolfe’s Neck Farm

What’s a fun thing to do on a lovely spring day? Head to Wolfe’s Neck Farm in Freeport. Their annual spring festival was scheduled for early June, and we decided to take a ride up and check out the festivities.

The description of the farm from their brochure reads,

“Wolfe’s Neck Farm is a nonprofit educational farm dedicated to promoting sustainable agriculture, farm-based learning, and outdoor recreation while preserving 626 acres of open space and historic buildings.”

I was familiar with the farm but had actually never visited so I was looking forward to the road trip. As we got closer to the farm, we were greeted by stunning ocean views. There is a campground at Wolfe’s Neck Farm, Recompence Shore Campground, which is along the oceanfront and looks like an amazing place to stay. I might have to add that to my to-do list. Although I gave away my tent, after storing it unopened in my basement for ten years, there are a few cabins available to rent at the campground.

Five Fun Summer Festivals Happening in Maine

Some summer activities unfold organically as a lazy weekend lays before you and you decide a day or two before how you want to get the most from the warm days. Other events take a bit more planning. You need to clear your schedule and, in some cases, get tickets ahead of time so that you don’t miss out on the fun.

Both types of activities have a place on my summer to do list, but for those that require advanced planning now is the time to start marking them down on the calendar. With that in mind, here’s a hit list of a few of the festivals happening in Maine this summer that are worth planning for ahead of time.

Lobster Rolls from Bite into Maine Food Truck

Food Trucks have been on the rise in recent years and that’s a great thing for food lovers. There are so many creative, unique ones in the greater Portland area and we’re looking forward checking some of them out this summer. With that goal in mind, we headed out to Bite Into Maine this past Saturday. I had been hearing a lot about this food truck in recent months and was craving a lobster roll. Not really surprising. I’m always  craving a lobster roll.

Food trucks come in a lot of varieties. They can be truly mobile and head to different locations from day-to-day adding a sense of adventure to getting your meal. Other food trucks might specialize in attending festivals, or other gatherings, and be more of an event type truck. Still others are located in the same place and, while technically mobile, can always be found in one spot.

Skating at Thompson's Point

Skating at The Rink at Thompson’s Point

You would think skating would be a pretty easy winter activity for us. We live on a lake. But, it’s complicated. Since we have neither the equipment nor the desire to shovel off a skating rink size area on the ice, which would allow us to actually skate, we have a wait and see approach. This means that usually once a year, we get enough rain, or the snow covering the ice melts, followed by a cold weather snap which freezes everything over and makes for a perfect day of skating.

We haven’t had those conditions yet, and our oldest had been asking, and asking, to skate so we finally decided it was time to venture out to an actual rink. But where should we go? Fortunately, a Facebook friend had posted a great sunset picture taken at The Rink at Thompson’s Point. It looked like a fun destination so we added it to our weekend activities list.
