I am not someone who is easily bored and lately I’ve been in creative overdrive. It’s helping to balance out the monotony of life under COVID-19 restrictions. I have a few projects that are taking up most of my time this month. I’m preparing for the April A to Z blogging challenge and will have my theme reveal post for that project on March 8th. I am also currently spending weekends fixing up a family beach house as we get ready to transition it into a rental property. We’re still in the fixing the broken stuff phase but I did paint some sample colors on the walls this past weekend so the fun stuff is getting closer.
And, as I do every month, I’m working on my One Little Word® prompts. My vision board came together quickly for February and this month we’re focusing on developing a monthly practice. Last year I actually did two monthly practices – meditation and working on my blog. They both went well and I enjoyed them but this year I want to do something a little different. I loved the approach of the guest instructor Victoria Calvin which was to focus on tackling something light, creative and easy. I really want this prompt to have more of a creative connection to my word Breathe and not add stress to my life.
The One Little Word class has a Facebook group and a fellow classmate posted that they were thinking of doing a photo a day for the monthly prompt. I instantly connected to that idea. I post fairly regularly on Instagram already but like the idea of having more intentional photos this month that connect back to my word.
There are lots of photo challenges out there and I looked through a few to get some ideas but none were exactly what I wanted to focus on this month so I created my own challenge specific to my word breathe.
In January, I wrote some intentions for my word:
- Physical. Breathe means slowing down and being healthy.
- Emotional. Breathe means maintaining calm and peace.
- Spiritual. Breathe means paying attention in the moment.
- Relationships. Breathe means being present.
- Creative. Breathe means diving in and focusing on the things I love.
I wanted to include these intentions in my photo challenge especially as it relates to staying in the moment and being present. I think photography can really help you with being more present. It allows you to stay in the moment and take things in more fully. It can help you see things you wouldn’t notice on first glance.

I’ve picked words that will remind me to breathe every day this month. I don’t know if I’ll hit all of these challenge words and they may not end up in the order I’ve outlined. I also might swap out one or two prompts if I find others I like better.
Either way, I’ll go easy on myself. The mantra of our class is progress not perfection. I want this one to be fun.
Here’s my photo from day one: Nature
Have you ever done a photo challenge? Do you have any favorite word prompts?
Ah, I did One Little Word last year, or rather, attempted to do it. I ran out of gas in July, though I had a good time with it until then. My word was Tactile.
Way back in my early IG days (2010?) I joined a Photo a Day challenge with a blogger from Australia. I like your custom prompts. More in spirit with One Little Word than some random challenge.

I’ve done One Little Word about five years and there was one year where I didn’t make it to the end either. It’s always interesting to me which words I end up connecting with versus those that I don’t. This year I’ve really connected with my word. I’m excited for the photo challenge this month.
